During the year ended March 31, 1948, 171 vessels arrived at Greymouth, representing 108,757 tong; In the same period, 168 vessels, representing 106,090 tons, left. The weather during the year was the best since 1'922, according to the report of Captain H. Moar (Harbourmaster). Except for the past two months, the bar depth had been good, averaging 23 feet 5 inches, while the river depth averaged 21 feet 9 inches.
A skull which was found on March 22 of.this year, about 11 miles south of Waiouru, has been identified by the police from dental records as that of Walter Thomas Hoare, of Lower Hutt. On April 21, 1946, Hoare, who was; then aged 22, was a member of a deer-stalking party camped between Waiouru and Taupo. He left the camp to go deer-stalking, and failed to return.
The tender' of Mr A. R. Sheldon for £75 has been accepted by the Hokitika Borough Council fof the removal of the 70-year-old Town Hall in Revell Street. . Once one of the most imposing buildings in the town the hall has been unused for the past year, when the municipal offices were removed to the library building. There is much sound timber in the old building, but the foundations have given way and many leaks have developed.
