COPLAND PASS INQUEST FINDING

' . TIMARU. June 1. The coroner, Mr M. M. Enting this morning gave his verdict on the deaths of Thelma Leone Jefcoate, Christina Margaret Sullivan, nurses of Dunedin, and Joan Gabriel Bust; office worker, of Christchurch, who died on Copland Pass, Mt. Cook, on the night of April 6-7. The verdict was that all three died of exposure to cold caused through blizzard conditions. The coroner recommended that the Internal Affairs Department should give serious consideration to framing regulations and conditions permitting a definite measure of control of parties led by professional guides and that all professional guides be licensed. In the first aid equipment used in mountaineering suitable non-alco-holic stimulating tablets should be included and mountain huts on regular tourist routes should be provisioned with emergency food supplies.
