CRICKET AUSTRALIA TAKES IT EASY IN NOTTS MATCH

LONDON, May 31. The Australians made little attempt to force the pace in the second day's nlay against Nottinghamshire. The total of 400 runs was made in a shade better than even time. Incidental co the batting practice for the first test on the same ground next week, the lessons learned about the pitch characteristics should be invaluable. Brown’s century was an assured, polished knock, marred by two chances and a patch of uncertainty between the eighties and the 100. He opened his shoulders when he passed the 100. His 122 was made m ZO3 minutes. This was Brown’s fourth century of the tour. Bradman’s 86 was unusually sedate, but sound. He gave a hard chance in the slins at 66. Brown and Bradman added 165 runs for the second wicket. Forceful knocks by Hassett and Miller followed and at’ tea Australia had scored 334 runs for five wickets. The last five wickets fell for 66 runs. Nottinghamshire had half an hour’s batting before stumps. The openers set out shakily, facing a leeway of 221 runs. They had scored 16 runs without loss at stumps, but both Keeton and Winrow were discomfited by Lindwall’s speed. Stumps were drawn a few minutes early because Keeton was struck over the heart by a very fast ball from Lindwall and had to retire. He was taken to hospital immediately he was helped from the ground for X-ray examination. This showed he was only bruised. Scores NOTTINGHAM, Ist. Innings .. 179 AUSTRALIA—First Innings.
