RACING NOTES

(By

“Galtee Moore”)

Jovial Hour Jumped Well For Frame R. J. Frame stood out among the riders in. the Winter Hurdles at Omoto on Saturday. For a newcomer to the ranks of jumpers, Jovial Hour took his fences with confidence under Frame’s hands and he won decisively. It was a really impressive debut for Jovial Hour jumped well all the way, and his performance augurs well for his future prospects, in this department. Frame r’ode a grand race and attracted attention to his riding ability. Unfortunately increasing weight, has restricted his activities on the flat but now that the winter season is in vogue, Frame’s services are likely to he keenly sought in the cross' country events as he is an extremely vigorous rider, and sits a horse well. Earlier in his riding career, Frame was attached to the Washdyke stable of W. P. Hogan and he appears to be assimilating the instruction imparted to him by. that well known riding tutor Attracted Attention Much interest was taken in the locally-owned pair, Shenandoah and Faultrosa in the Barrytown Handicap at ‘Cmoto. However, they were both well beaten by the Orari visitor, Sword Dancer, who outstayed his opponents in the going. Shenandoah was an easy second after looking a likely winnei' at the straight entrance, but on the other hand, Faultrosa was never travelling like a winner, and seemed to be uneasy in the conditions. Nevertheless, thej 7 both are capable of much better things, and should turn out payable propositions for the Greymouth sportsmen, Messrs D. R. Dowell and H. Moore, respectively. Night Owl Won Well Night Cwl won narrowly but nicely on Saturday, but the truth was that young Billy Skelton stole the race. The G? - ari horseman had his mount nicely placed and following a smart run from the three to the two had the measure of one of the early pacemakers, Dress Rehearsal. He moved up to tackle Young John. In a battle of tactics all down the straight, Skelton out-rode the North Island horseman, K. R. Ford, to go on and salute the judge for the third time for the day. Skelton was the leading rider for the day, and still holds pride of place among the apprentice riders for the season. Failed To Stay Dress Rehearsal as usual soon reached the front but she ran a shocking race, stopping to a walk from the turn. It looks as if she will required a good track before she can use her brilliant speed to the fullest advantage. Her confident backing was inspired by her brilliance but she was plainly in trouble before they swung for the run in. May Make Amends Renege was backed as a good thing in the open sprint, but she never really flattered her supporters, being unable to cope with the early pace. The Defaulter mare was not knocked about in the final stages when her chances were negligible, and she should make amends in the near future. Finished Fast The Nightly three-year-old Ruling Night finished with a terrific burst

to take the thick end of the stake off Cerisetie who looked all over a winner with half the journey covered. Cerisette still held command at the distance but Skelton ranged alongside with Ruling Night and riding with hands and heels he literally lifted Ruling Night over the line. First Win A very popular win was scored when Leigh Note reached the winning list in the second division of the Maiden Stakes, to return her supporters double figure odds. She had to work hard to head off the favourite, Dinard, who attempted to win all the way. Leigh Note races in the colours of the Kumara sportsman, Mr Gordon Elley, and is framed for him at Hokitika, by M. C'onza. Impressive Winner Flying Orders was never seriously tested over the concluding stages of the Gladstone Handicap and he may not be long in giving a repeat per formance. The only element of surprise about his win was the good price he returned his backers. He out-galloped the field in an effortless style and coasted past the post with his ears pricked some three lengths ahead of the field. WONDER BOY OUT Wonder Bpv was withdrawn from the Cornwall Handicap at 11.25 a.m. yesterday.—P.A.
