Imperial Conference Wanted by Britain

LONDON, May 28 Authoritative quarters in London said the plans for an autumn conference of Dominion leaders, will go forward so far as Britain is concerned, regardless of the change m the South African Government. Political observers in London recognise that there might be difficulties about having a conference composed entirely of Dominion Prime Ministers. Dr Malan, who will succeed General Smuts, may find it impossible to leave his country for some time, assuming the conference is held in London. The impending retirement of Mr Mackenzie King leaves doubt about Canada’s representative and Pandit Nehru and Liaquat Ali Khan, of India and Pakistan respectively, also have great domestic problems. The deferment of the conference until early in 1949 would not ease the position because the Royal visit to New Zealand and Australia, will keep the leaders of these countries at home.
