UPTURNED SCOW ADRIFT OFF EAST COAST
NAPIER, May 29. Steps to recover the abandoned scow Vectus, which in the early hours of Thursday morning parted from the motor vessel Kopara off Castlepoint, while being towed from Lyttelton to Napier, were discussed this morning by those responsible for the salvage operations. No decision was reached. In the meantime, the whereabouts of the scow remain' uncertain. According to Captain F. S. Bates, the master of the Kopara, the scow overturned after being swamped. The dead-weight on the long tow line caused it to break. The Kopara stood by for two hours, but seeing the impossibility of getting a line on to the upturned vessel, the master decided that he could do nothing and continued on to Napier. The scow was last seen, with bottom up, drifting, seawards. A decision was reached to hold a marine inquiry at Napier on Monday. ‘No statement is available regarding the measures to recover the vessel. which is now concluded to be well out to sea. The Marine Department has warned shipping.
