DISASTROUS FLOODS IN NORTH-WEST U.S.A. AND BRITISH COLUMBIA
15,000 Homeless and Great Damage (Rec. 7.25). NEW YORK, May 29. At least fifteen thousand persons have been made homeless, fifteen people have been drowned, and millions of dollars of crop, and waterfront and industrial damage have been inflicted by spring thaw floods which now are surging over large sections of the State of Washington, and also over the States of Idaho, Montana and the Canadian province of British Columbia. The rising waters, which have been swelled both by rains and by the melting of snow, have threatened floods of disaster proportions on many fronts. Along almost the full course of the Columbia River the situation is reported to be the worst since the year 1894, and the peak of the flood still has to hit with its full force downstream. The Governor of Idaho has proclaimed a state of emergency. .
TASMANIAN FLOODS HOBART, May 29. The worst flood in 50 years caused thousands of pounds worth of damage and ruined a large part of the apple crop in the Huon district of , southern Tasmania. Rescuers had to evacuate nine families from their homes in the. Derwent and Huon valleys. The tiny New Zealand trader, Huia, is several days overdue, but no concern is felt for yet, though all ships are warned of, Eass Strait storms.
