Sales Tax on Council Vehicles
P.A. DUNEDIN, April 15. Dunedin wanted 90 to 100 trolley buses and would have to pay £l,OOO sales tax on each of them, said the Mayor of -Dunedin, Mr D. C. Cameron.’ at the Municipal Conference .this morning. He was advocating an addition to a. remit moved bv C. M. Tracey (Papatoetoe, which urged the Minister of Finance to remit sales tax on water meters, pipe fittings and other equipment used in house construction, fire-fighting equipment traffic lights and equipment, and road-making machinery and materials. ...
Mr Tracey said the principle underlying the remit had full support. TheT’e was unfair taxation on articles for local body work and only the ratepayers bore the cost. Mr Cameron said he wanted to see th e remit applied to sales tax on trolley buses. Mr A. Wachner (Invercargill) asked whether it was intended to cover the services provided by private enterprise. Mr L. T. Jacobsen suggested that sales tax should be remitted on all equipment 'needed by local bodies. His amendment that sales tax should be remitted on everything required by local bodies for public services was carried.
