NEW OATH PROPOSED FOR VICTORIAN CIVIL SERVANTS
MELBOURNE, April 15. The Premier. Mr Holloway, says he favours legislation to compel all members of the Public Service to take an oath of allegiance, but that Cabinet will decide the issue next Tuesday. • - . , , The State Liberal. Party, which decided to put a motion to that effect before the Cabinet, also decided unanimously that the nature and timing of any lepislation against subversive associations or activities should be left to the Cabinet. Mr Holloway explained that the proposed oath of allegiance would be to the King, not to the Government, and that any person who refused to take it would be insulting the King. Such a person would not be fit to be a member of the Public Service. He emphasised that the State Government had no intention of bringing down an anti-Communist Bill, except in an emergency. The Government did not intend to provoke trouble.
