RUGBY FOOTBALL West Coast Union’s Meeting

Mr F. W. Baillie presided over last evening’s meeting of the Management Committee of the West Coast Rugby Union. Also present were: Messrs A. Agnew, E. W. Shannon, W. Williams, W. Blair, S. Hendry, S. McDonnell, E. M. Todd,- G. W. Ormandy, M. R. Bunt, J. Jackson, A. M. Jamieson and O. McLean (actingsecretary) It was decided to postpone the appointment of senior selectors till next Tuesday evening. The Westland Sub-Union reported that a Junior Advisory Borad was set up and functioning well. It was reported that 180 boys were playing lower grade football in Hokitika. Seven applications for re-admis-sion to the code were received and it was decided to forward same to the New Zealand Union with favourable recommendations. A deputation of four members of the Westland Sub-Union, comprising Messrs V. Algar, A. Stephens, F. Parks and G. Kelly, waited on the Junior Advisory Board and was welcomed by the chairman, Mr G. Ormandy. The delegation requested permission to enter one fourth grade team and one fifth grade team in the local competition. After a full discussion a satisfactory arrangement was entered into, the competitions to commence on 24th. inst. The delegates later attended the Union meeting and were welcomed by Mr Baillie, Mr Algar replying to the welcome. In reply to a suggestion from the Junior Advisory Board that more seasoned referees should referee lower grade matches, Messrs Bunt and Agnew referred to the fact that all senior referees took their turn in refereeing matches down to seventh grade. Station -3ZR advised that application had been received to broadcast the League trial match on May 8 instead of Rugby, and this the Union consented to. The Canterbury Union advised that application for the usual match on King’s Birthday had been referred to the Match Committee. The Canterbury Union adopted the suggestion that there should be an interchange of referees for home and home matches between the two unions.

Mr F. B. Lawn’s offer to supply a new sign board for Rugby Park was accepted with thanks. Mr Agnew offered to paint the sign. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY Senior: Cobden v. Star, Park 1, at 3 p.m. (C. Sub-Union Meeting

Mr A. Stevenson presided at the weekly meeting of the Westland Rugby Football Sub-Union on Monday evening. Kokatahi Club asked for a postponement of their match on Saturday owing to social reasons. The Sub-Union resolved that the match be set down, and any other arrangements made in regard to the match would have to be between the two clubs, and agreed to by their dele- ° cItCS. It was decided to ask the Athletic Club to fill in the sand pit at the encl of No. 1 field. At the request of the Referees’ Association, the time of meeting on Monday evenings was changed from 7.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The recommendation of the senior clubs to have a sole selector was adopted. Clubs have been asked to submit recommendations for the position at the next meeting, when the appointment will be macle. In the junior grade three selectors were appointed. They were Messrs H. Pierson, E. J. Allan and E. J. Langdon. Three reclassifications from league to rugby were recommended. Two Kokatahi players were re-graded to junior status. The chairman and secretary were appointed delegates to the Aid-for-Britain meeting to be held on Thursday evening. Referees have been instructed to carry out an inspection of all players' sprigs prior to the commencement of matches next Saturday. St. Mary’s are to be the caretaking club for Saturday. The West Coast Rugby Union asked for nominations for selectors, and advised .that it intended to appoint three selectors for the senior grade. The Sub-Union decided to hold the matter over for one week, to receive recommendations from senior clubs. The Referees’ Association was granted authority to purchase three white jerseys. Kiwi Club’s offer to sponsor a midget seven-a-side team was accepted and referred to the Junior Advisory Board. The allocation of school footballs was referred to the Junior Advisory Board. The Kokatahi Club forwarded a donation of £2 2s for the injured players’ fund, and an offer from the club the conduct a ball at Kokatahi and hand the profits to the fund. The secretary reported that Dr D. J. McLean had kindly offered to oe on duty at his surgery ' in Hamilton Street between 5 and 6 p.m. on Saturday afternoons to attend to any injured players during his week-end on duty. The offer was received with thanks. The Sub-Union resolved to discuss at its meeting on April 2’6 a scheme to secure .funds for injured players. Each club is to be asked to raise the sum of £25 to be paid to the fund. Accounls totalling £9 16s 3d were passed. The Junior Advisory Board held its meeting following the Suh-Union meeting. The following fixtures were set down for Saturday, April 17: —

Senior Grade:— Excelsiors v. St. Marv’s, No. 2 ground, at 2.30 at Hokitika (referee, H. Pearson). Kiwis v. Celtic at Hokitika No. 1 ground, at 2.45 (M. Davidson).

Junior: — Kiwis v. Pirates at Woodstock at 2.30 (F. Stapleton). Excelsiors v. St. Mary’s at Hokitika, 1.30 (S. Tuhuru). Ross v. Kokatahi at Kokatahi, ZoU (J. Roberts).
