Mr L. B. Berry, sales engineer of the refrigerated division of General Motors Ltd., Wellington is on a visit to Greymouth.

Mr H. L. Bockett, secretary of Labour, and Mr H. Parsonage, assistant secretary will arrive to-morrow from Westport. They will visit Reefton on Saturday for the opening of the miners’ hostel by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. A. McLagan.

West Coast representatives at a timber industry conference being held at Rotorua are Messrs A. L. McKay (chairman), E. Parfitt (Export Secretary), and K. -0. May, of the West Coast Sawmillers’ Association.

After 40 years’ service, Mr J. A. Shannon, Chief Clerk on the staff of the Public Works Department at Greymouth, will retire on May 8. Mr Shannon, who has been at Greymouth for the past 11 years, entered the department at Wellington, and has subsequently been stationed at Nelson, Taumarunui, Gisborne, Wanganui, Okahukura and Greymouth.

Director of Naval Intelligence at the Admiralty since 1946, and formerly Chief of Naval Staff to the New Zealand Naval Board, and also Commander of the H.M.S. Achilles in the Battle of the River Plate, Vice-Ad-miral W. E. Parry has been appointed Chief of the Naval Staff and Flag Officer Commanding the Royal Indian Navy from July, 1948, in succession to Rear-Admiral J. T. S. Hall.

Archbishop West-Watson, Primate of New Zealand, accompanied by the Bishop of Aotearoa, Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, will leave Christchurch to-morrow evening on his way to Britain to attend the Lambeth Anglican Conference to be held from July 1 to August 8. The Polynesian and Melanesian missionary dioceses will be represented by Bishop Kempthorne and Bishop Coulton respectively.

Many West Coast friends of Mr Drummond McMeekan will regret to learn of the death of his wife, Mrs Caroline McMeekan., which took place in Christchurch yesterday. The late Mrs McMeekan conducted the Taramakau and Lake lanthe Hotels with her husband for some years before their retirement to Christchurch a few years ago. Besides hei- husband, the late Mrs McMeekan, who was 66 years of age, leaves three sisters and a brother, who reside at Southbridge.

Trolove (Manala); Mr and Mrs Masters (Hamilton).

The death occurred suddenly at an Auckland private hospital yesterday afternoon of Mrs Mary Kate Horrack, aged 61 years, and a native of Cobden. The late Mrs Horrack spent the greater part of her life on the West Coast, being a member of the well-known Callanan family. Predeceased by her husband 8 years ago, she is survived by two daughters. Jean, of Wellington, and Mrs M. Nord, of Christchurch, and two sons, John (Auckland) and Kevin (Blaketown). She also leaves a brother, Mi- J. Callanan, of Runanga. The funeral takes place to-morrow at Auckland.

Mr John Harrington, a former resident of Blaketown died suddenly yesterday morning whilst being taken to hospital in Christchurch' from Amberley where he was employed by the Railways Department. 'rhe,„.Jate Mr Harrington, who was a native of Greymouth, was formerly employed in mines in this district, later joining the railway service. Predeceased by his parents and three brothers, he leaves four sisters, Mesdames A. Grimble, J. Campbell, P. Fisher and J. Fisher, of Christchurch; and six brothers, Messrs Percy, Robert, Len, Stan (Greymouth), Thomas. (Invercargill) and Charles (Christchurch), to whom the sympathy of many friends will be extended. The funeral takes place In Christchurch.
