Three cases of scarlet fever and one of eclampsia were reported from the West Coast last week, while there were two deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis in the Canterbury health district. Notifiable diseases reported were: Tuberculosis, one; unbulent fever, one; hydatids, one; and food poisoning, one.

A Proctor low-winged monoplane, the property of the Middle Districts (North Island) Aero Club, which arrived in Greymouth on Sunday with private passengers for Greymouth, returned to Palmerston North yesterday after touring South Westland. The plane was piloted by Mr Jenson, of- Palmerston North.

When he fell, during the lunchhour at the Greymouth Technical High School yesterday, Leslie John McNicol, a 16-year-o,ld schoolboy, residing in Edwin street, Blackball, sustained a fracture of the left wrist. He was admitted to the Grey River Hospital, where his condition last evening was satisfactory.

Mr W. Stewart, presided at. a well attended meeting in aid of the Food for Children Campaign, at Kumara last evening, when arrangements were made for a further appeal. Good progress is being made. A hairdressing service is to be provided bv the Auckland Hospital Boardfor the women’s staff of the Middlemore Hospital. The secretary, Mr R F. Galbraith, reported to the board last week that there was provision foi a salon, consisting of a large room with shampoo-equipped basins and mirrors, an office and a vestibule, on the first floor of the main nurses' home and he suggested that tenders should be invited for the lease of these facilities. This course was adopted by the board. On Wednesday next, April 21, a surface mail for the United Kingdom, Eire and Europe, except the Balkan States and Italy, will close at the Chief Post Office, Greymouth, at. 5.30 p.m. The Chief Postmaster, Mr H. C. Rowe, also advises that, \Vith chartered Tasman flights arranged for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of this- week air mail for Australia. the United Kingdom and Europe should be posted at the Chief Post Office, Greymouth, at 9.45 a.m., on Wednesday and Thursday to connect with the service l leaving New Zealand on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

It has been agreed by the Dobson Miners' Union that the men shall work on Anzac Day and May Day insead of observing the usual holidays, in compliance with the Government’s request. Liverpool miners decided at a meeting that they will observe the holidays as formerly. Four other mines have still to consider the request. During the week-end the Buller Miners’ Central Committee decided to comply with the request of the Government.

Mawhera Quay from Boundary Street to the Cobden bridge has been considerably brightened recently b.y flood-light improvements on the Wharf. The reflectors in the lights have been replaced with new ones. One light, shining on the road, has, however, created a glare for on-com-ing traffic. The matter has been referred to the appropriate authority. The light in question is to be turned slightly more towards the river.

The monthly meeting of the Runanga Women’s Institute was held in the Fire Brigade Hall, Mrs Gillaly presiding ovei’ a fair attendance, and reading the aspirations. T^ e rollcall was annual subscrintions. The following delegates were appointed to the Dominion conference: Mrs Gillaly, and the annual conference, Mesdames Sweeney and Todd. The competition for an article from scraps of wool resulted: Mrs Schultze 1. Mrs Hadcroft 2. Mrs Clelland 3. Garden product, Mrs Clelland. The social half-hour was given by Mesdames Sweeney and Cairney, arid prize-winners were Mesdames Barrow and Pattison. The hostesses for the evening were the newly-elected committee.

When the Gabriella arrives in Greymouth within the next few days, she‘ will carry 400 tons of general cargo from Wellington. It will include all . overseas shipments available. Some commodities have been on the short list for a time. It is believed that shortages in some lines of. overseas goods will, for the time being at least, be eased.
