£900 SHORT IN INCOME RETURNS

NAPIER, April 12.

Fines totalling £3OO were imposed on Louis Wood, a wool-scourer, of Napier, by Mr L. G. H. Sinclaii’ in the Magistrate’s Court to-day for making false returns of income. The charges related to the four years, 1942 to 1946. His real income was £11,333 for the whole period and the total shown in the returns was £2819. The offence had been continuing since 1936 and in the period 1936-42 the returns were short by £6842, said Mr H. C. Sproule, representing the Commissioner of Taxes. He added that over the period of 10 years the total tax deficiency was £6527. Wood, who' pleaded guilty, was fined £75 with costs on each charge.
