BRITISH THANKS FOR COLLECTION OF FATS
The Aid-for-Britain national council to-day received a cable. from the British Ministry of Food, which states: —-“delighted with your news of a Dominionwide campaign to collect fats for Britain. Express our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the continued efforts made by the women of Otago and Southland. Fats are of invaluable assistance.
It is heartening and encouraging to know that we are in the thoughts of our many generous friends in New Zealand. The Fort Grant gift was recently allocated to hospitals and charitable institutions in th ft county of Yorkshire.”
The message, which was signed by the Minister of Food, Mr J. Strachey, ■was prompted by a recent decision of the national council to extend throughout the Dominion, the fat collection scheme of Mr Philip Barling, of Dunedin. It is hoped that, under the new scheme, a further 1000 tons of fat will be sent to Britain annually, apart from what is already being sent through other channels. The chairman of the national council, Mr F. P. Walsh, said tonight that petrol tins will be supplied to any farmer’s wife, or other person willing to fill tins with edible fat. The tins will be transported free and shipped direct to the overseas gifts allocation centre of the British Ministry of Food. The basic organisation of the scheme will be through the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, though other organisations are invited to co-operate.
