KUMARA NOTES

[Our Own .Correspondent]

Kumara’s oldest established drapery, footwear and stationery business, that of the late Mr Henry Hamer, who died a year ago, this week passed into the hands of Mr Phil Duffy, of Greymouth. Mr Hamer, who arrived in Kumara in 1898, established the business in 1902, and conducted it most efficiently until his death. Since then Mrs Hamer and her daughter. Mrs A. Sinclair, have given genera] satisfaction to the public in their management of the store. At the time of his death, Mr Hamer was the oldest West Coast customer of Ross and Glendenning, Ltd. His most notable achievement in business was to secure the New Zealand agency for lammies, for which he had a reputation extending from north of Auckland to Stewart Island. Throughout the years he served the public, Mr Hamer was a most popular businessman, and Mr Duffy who entered the premises last week is assured of receiving the same support from the peonle of the district. Kumara’s Post Office has been completely renovated, both inside and out, and is now the cleanest and neatest office in Westland. Gangs of Post and Telegraph men have made a splendid job, and the office has a completely new appearance. The Postmaster, Mr J. F. Fitzpatrick, who has done notably good work for the Health Stamp and National Savings campaigns since coming to Kumara, will now have provided for him much more comfortable quarters.

Mrs H. Hamer, who has relinquished her* business intends to live in Kumara with her brother. Mr W. Jamieson (Palmertson North) has left for the Glaciers after visiting his cousin, Mrs E. Martyn. Mr Pat Foley (Wellington), is at present visiting his sister, Miss E. Foley, of Tui Street. Mr and Mrs Woodlark (Papanui), visited friends in Kumara last week. Mr and Mrs Spearman (Christchurch), were visitors to Kumara last week-end. Mr and Mrs Birss have returned home from Dunedin. Mr and Mrs E. Rose left for Dunedin by last Saturday’s express.
