Press Correspondents in Trouble at Argentine Capital

NEW YORK, April 11. A correspondent of the New York Times, Virginia Lee Warren, in a message from Buenos Aires, says a United States citizen, Mr John Griffiths, who was a cultural attache in the United States Embassy in Buenos Aires, is believed to be in goal. Virginia Lee Warren herself was arrested in connection with the bank employees’ strike, but was released immediately upon her promise to report to the Federal Police. One foreign correspondent in Buenos Aires has gone into hiding as a result of bitter attacks against her in Argentine newspapers. She is Mrs Nora Pines de Viterbo. an Italian citizen employed by the Overseas News Agency. The Peron regime has accused her of commenting on the Argentine bank employees’ strike. According to a spokesman for the Italian Embassy, she is well and safe. The director and the managing editor of the Overseas News Agency are stated to be in gaol, and a former correspondent for the London News Chronicle is being held incommunicado. Mr Amadeo Recanati, who' recently became director of the Overseas New Agency’s Bureau in Buenos Aires, and of Mr Rocardo Rascow- 1 sky, the managing editor of the same agency were arrested. A former corresoondent of the News incommunicado is Mrs Monica Milward, who was born in Chile, but holds British citizenship. No charge has been made against her, but the Federal Judge who ordered her arrest told the British Consul that he wished to interrogate her “concerning certain friends.” She is a friend of Mrs Viterbo. Mr Griffiths telephoned his son that he would be come within an hour. He has not been heard of since, and it is believed too, he is being held incimmunicado.
