INVERCARGILL TRUST WANTS FURTHER HOTEL
INVERCARGILL, April 12 The Invercargill Licensing Trust today discussed a proposal that it should take over one of the private hotels in the city, the Criterion, in Don St., to increase the amount of hotel accommodation available to visitors.
“We cannot get permits for new buildings, and have to look round for scraphouses,” Mr S. Anderson said. “There are only two good hotels in the city area. I think no permits have been granted because the Government does not realise the true position.” '“We are not here only /to sell liquor,” said the chairman, Mr H. Ritchie. “At present the trust is catering for a certain class only, and better accommodaion for the other peoples is needed. Mr Ritchie .added that he did not propose that the Criterion should be licensed, but that an effort should be made to • improve facilities for visitors.
A good deal of renovation would be needed to bring the Criterion up to the* required standard. It was decided that the proposal should be held over until an estimate had been made of the likely cost.
