American and British officials are discussing the. problem of how to prevent the British from using dollars which they receive under the Marshall Relief Plan to underwrite Britain’s operations as the banker for the sterling area. The view has been expressed in Washington that Britain should exercise tighter controls over the drain of dollars from th e sterling area, which amounted in 1947 to about one thousand million dollars.
