142 PASSENGERS ARRIVE BY RUAHINE

32 FOR HOSPITAL WORK P.A. WELLINGTON, April 11. With 142 passengers, including 39 assisted women immigrants, from Britain, the Ruahine berthed to-day. She was delayed by a heavy southerly storm. She arrived in the stream shortly after 6.30 on Saturday evening, ' about 12 hours behind the original schedule. She was 42 days on the voyage. Of the 39 assisted immigrants. 32 are hospital staff, booked to go to hospitals in all parts of the Dominion. Prominent passengers included Lord Beveridge, author of Britain’s social security structure, and Lady Beveridge: Dr F. Bielschowsky, an eminent figure in cancer research, who is .to be director of the new cancer re■search laboratories at Otago University and his wife; Captain D. Hammersley Johnstone, who is to take over command of H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona; Colonel R. V. Queree, who, it is understood, is to become Quarter-master-General at Army Headquarters in Wellington. Captain Johnstone is accompanied by his wife. Colonel Queree has with him his wife, two sons, and two daughters. On the voyage calls were made, at Curacoa, Panama Canal, and Pitcairn Island. From Pitcairn the Ruahine brought Mrs Hilda Young and her six-year-old son, Alarie. to New Zealand. Mrs Young’s husband is a carpenter on the Public Works staff at Auckland. Alarie is to go to the Deaf and Dumb School at Titirangi. On a visit to three sons whom he has not seen for many years, W. Foddy, a Rugby octogenerian, arrived in the Ruahine from England. He expects to stay in New Zealand about two months. Originally.five of his sons came to the Dominion to settle, hut two of them have returned to England. The others are Mr W. Foddy (Palmerston North), and John’ and Frank Foddy (Hastings). All three of them greeted their father when the ship berthed. On the way from England. Mr Foddy, senior, celebrated his 84th birthday. There was a special cake and presentation for the occasion.
