COAL OUTPUT INCREASES WITH SEVEN-HOUR DAY
'Overall production from State coal mines in the Grey district last week, the first since the introduction of the seven hour day for men employed undergi ound, showed an increase. Thus the miners have kepi their promise to the Minister of Mines that if they were given a shorter working day, coal output would not fall. Only two mines—Wallsend and Paparoa, failed to show an increase and, in the latter case a stop-work meeting during the week was the contributing factor to this decrease. Perhaps the record of the mines is more meritorious on account of shortages of staffing in the mines, this ,of course, has meant that in some mines, production of figures of say 1943, are down, but nevertheless last week’s -'-rformance was an indication of the willingness of the men to keep their promise and maintain production.
