MacArthur’s Comment On Republican Primaries
TOKIO, April 8 General MacArthur’s only comment on the Wisconsin primary election was: “One of the things which have made our country great is that men may thus freely speak their minds and fearlessly record_their individual viewpoints. Let. us always preserve it that way.” Officials in Tokio close MacArthur earlier said he might remain silent until after the convention at Philadelphia. General MacArthur felt that he had not ‘tossed his hat into the Presidential ring,” but. had merely observed that he was available, as any good citizen should be. The officials said l hat on thisjine of reasoning, General MacArthur could easily take the attitude that since he had never sought the office there was no .need to make his reactions known immediately on the results of the Wisconsin primary. STRASSEN’S LEAD With votes from three-quarters of the polling places now counted, Mr Harold Stassen appears to have won 19 delegates in the Wisconsin primary elections for the Republican Party’s Presidential nomination. General MacArthur leads in eight contests. Mr Thomas Dewey has failed to set one of Wisconsin’s 27 Republican Convention Votes. Mr Stassen is now in the first division of contenders for the Republican Presidential nominations at the party’s convention, to be held at Philadelphia in June-
