Lord Douglas Joins British Labour Party
LONDON. April 9Labour Party headquarters has announced that Marshal of the R.A.F.. Lord Douglas of Kirtleside, had applied for party membership. The British Labour , Party looks like getting a blue riband recruit—-much-discussed burly Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Sir Shoito Douglas, said the “Daily Herald.” All he recently said is that after relinquishing the military governorship of the British zone in Germany and the position of commander-in-chief of the British forces, his future was decided, but he would not disclose it. It is believed that he intends to stand for Parliament as a that he would succeed Mr. Alexander as Defence Minister. Many New Zealanders served under 'Sir Shoito Douglas, who was in turn wartime commander of Fighter Command in the Middle East, in command of Coastal Command, and successor to Viscount Montgomery as Cpmmander-in-Chief in Germany in 1946.
