PALESTINE TRUCE TO BE DISCUSSED BY JEWS & ARABS
(Rec. 5.20). NEW YORK, April 7. Arab and Jewish representatives have agreed to 1 meet this afternoon the president of the U.N.O. Security Council, Dr Alfonso Lopez (Colombia) to discuss the calling of a truce in Palestine. Mosh P Shertok will represent, the Jewish Agency. Probably Jamal Husseini will represent th? Higher Arab Committee. The British delegate, Sir Alexander Cadogan, indicated Britain’s willingness to attend the truce meeting, if invited. ’.lhe French delegation made its stand on trusteeship clear, when M. Alexandre Parodi said, after the Security Council meeting, that there were three main difficulties iri the American proposal. Firstly, the United Nations must be assured that any new General Assembly decision would net again run the risk of not being applicable. Secondly, the United Nations must achieve some agreement between the Arabs and the Jews on immigration “so as to avoid the tragedy which may result from an absence of regulations when the mandate ends”. Thirdly, he said, th? maintenance of law and order cannot be left entirely to the Governorgeneral of Palestine. M. Farodi said that, if those difficulties were not resolved by an accurate, detailed document before May 15, it was only too probable that the fighting might become more violent, and might degenerate into massacres, the responsibility for which the United Nations could not evade.
