Organised Labour Wins at Auckland From Communists
P.A. AUCKLAND, April 7. Another watersiders’ poll has been lost by Mr. Alex Drennan, Chairman of the New Zealand Communist Party, President of the Auckland Trades Council, and National VicePresident of New Zealand Watersiders’ Union. He has been defeated for the seat he held as one of the watersiders’ three representatives on the Auckland port committee of the Waterfront Commission, which deals with wharf labour disputes. The seat has been won with a narrow majority by Mr. Noel Donaldson, who defeated Mr. Drennan a fortnight ago for the Vice-Presidency of the Auckland Union. Mr. H. Barnes, national and Auckland President, and Mr. F. McNamara were re-elected to tlie port committee. Mr. Barnes topped the poll. Success in Engineering Union Elections P.A. AUCKLAND, April 7. The Auckland Engineers’ Union has made a clean sweep of all six delegates to the Auckland Trades Council, who included some pro-Commun-ists. The New delegates were elected on Monday night at the annual meeting, which was described to-day by the President, Mr. S. Glading, as “a triumph for the organised section of the Labour Party.” Two hundred members attended.
