Winter’s Onslaught In The South

' DUNEDIN, April 7. Snow, sleet, hail, rain, and wind lashed Otago last night and this morning as winter marie its first onslaught after an exceptionally long spell of fine weather. The strongest gust of wind since records have been kept at Taieri swept across the countryside at 8.10 p.m., when a velocity of 76 m.p.h. was reached. During the height of the storm the wind averaged 50 m.p.h.. and frequently blew at 60 m.p.h. The hills around Dunedin were topped with white this morning. Earlier to-dav flurries of snow and sleet swept across the province. The damage caused by the storm was surprisingly light.
