From last night’s meeting of the Westland District Progress League the Post and Telegraph Department is to be thanked for its efforts m erecting telephone communication to Lamplough. The work was done in response to requests for the work by the League.

The Parliamentary Select Committee set up last session to inquire into the motion picture industry in New Zealand, held its first meeting yesterday when Mr R. M. Macfarlane (Government, Christchurch Central), was elected chairman. The committee will meet again from May 18 to hear evidence and will be open to the press.

The Canadian Bureau of Statistics cost-of-living index, on the base 1935-39 equals 100, rose from 148.0 on January 2 to 150.1 on February 2, 1948 The increase in this series between February, 1947 and February this year amounted to 22.3 points. From August, 1939, to February 2, 1948, the increase in the Dominion cost-of-living index was 48.9 per cent.

Advice has been received to the effect that 15,479 parcels for the United Kingdom posted in the Wellington district, southern half of the North Island, including Gisborne, and South Island (except Otago and Southland), during the period February sth. to 10th„ 1948, arrived at their destination on April 1. The total weight of the parcel mail, which was shipped from Wellington by the “Atlantis,” was 140,450 lbs.

Three new 20-seater “Mack” passenger coaches for the Hokitika-We-heka route are to be put into operation by the Railway Road Services in June or July. This advice was received by the Westland Progress League from the Department at last evening’s meeting. The letter also stated that the vehicles in use at. Hokitika on the Department’s services were Leyland coaches which were first registered in December, 1938. A recent survey showed that in all cases the bodies were in fair condition and that mechanically the vehicles were in good order.

A westerly gale, accompanied by frequent rain squalh' lashed Invercargill yesterday in one of the worst storms experienced in many months. The wind force at about 5 n.m. reached 75 miles an hour. Walking in the streets became hazardous .two of the persons blown over being admitted to hospital. Electric wires were broken, and as repairs could not be completed before darkness, power was not -restored in the suburbs to-night. Fences, radio masts and aerials were blown down in various parts of the city. A cycle shed was wrecked at Surrey Park School. Boisterous conditions continued tonight. Stormy weather is also reported in other parts of Southland. No work was possible on the Bluff waterfront yesterday.—P.A.
