WATAROA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent) The Wataroa Branch of the Federated Farmers at the annual meeting re-elected Mr Thomas Nolan as chairman, and Mr A. F. Clark as secretary, while Mr E. Vinez was elected vice-president. The following were elected as the committee: Messrs T. E. Nolan, R. William, Richards, J. J. Nisson, F. S. Gibb and McNabb. Among those present was Mr Thos. O’Neil, of the Westland Catchment Board. Mr Alf Purcell, of the Three Mile Beach, has returned after a holiday visit to the North Island. The recent dance at the Franz Josef Memorial Hall was well attended. The visitors present being from all parts of the Dominion. The metalling of the main highway is now proceeding. Messrs Cuppies and Lee are among those engaged on the job with lorries. When the work is done, the road will have been greatly improved. Several Wataroa residents are at present in the Paringa and Blue River district for the purpose of stalking deer. The present is the roaring season, when the bugling of the stags assembles the hinds from all directions, there being not only good shooting, but no little fighting among the males of the species. Silver pine lengths of large dimensions, for use as power poles, are at present being transported to Hokitikh by the Road Se”vice vehicles. These poles are of a very high quality, showing what is stored in the forests of South Westland, waiting for the wooded area to be penetrated by the railway. Among those present at the recent gathering was the well-known Queenstown airman, Mr Lucas, who does quite a deal of flying between his locality and South Westland.
