DE GAULLE CANDIDATES GAIN THE LEAD
Algerian Elections PARIS, Arpil 4 The Algiers country io-day voted to elect its first. Parliament. Troops were called out to restore order when seven were killed and six injured in rioting. The de Gaullists have won two seats so far. Under a new statute for the territory Algeria will have a Parliament of 120 ‘members, half .elected by French residents and the other half by Moslems. The new Parliament will not be independent. It can consider only its own budget and adaptation of French laws to local conditions. (Received April 5, at 5.25 p.m.) PARIS, April 5. The main cause of riothy; in the Algiers elections was a raid by about two thousand Separatists on a polling station at Aumal.e The Separatists ambushed Republican guards who were sent to restore order, they seized the guards’ vehicle, and wounded several guards. It was when the guards then opened fire on a crowd that seven were killed. (Rec. 11.40). LONDON, April 5. The British United Press Paris correspondent says: With over half of the votes counted, the candidates of General De Gaulle’s Party have gained a strong lead in the Algerian elections. They have thusfar won twenty-two of the sixty Upper House seats. The Communists have won no seats. The other parties have won thirteen seats.
