RAILWAY MAIL VAN BURGLED AT LYTTELTON

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. Six bags of second-class mail matter, which were unloaded from the inter-island steamer Flinemioa on Saturday morning, and which had been left in a railway mail van on the wharf, were found on Sunday morning to have been opened, and apparently rifled. The bags were unloaded too late to be taken to Christchurch in the passenger train on Saturday morning, and they were held at Lyttelton until mail transport could be arranged. They were placed in the van, the door of which was padlocked. About 6.30 o’clock on Sunday morning, the lock was found to have been forced, and the bags opened. It is thought that some of the contents were stolen. The police are investigating.
