ATHLETICS SPORTS MEETING AT VICTORIA PARK ATTRACTS LARGE CROWD
Favoured with fine weather, the West Coast Centre of the N.Z. Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union staged a highly successful sports meeting at Victoria Park on Saturday. The programme, which was conducted well to time, was witnessed by a large crowd.
Keen interest was taken ir| the chopping events, which drew large entries, and in the cycling, where riders from Canterbury and Nelson had fewer successes than usual, although H. Sutherland, of Rangiora, won the cup for the most points in all events.
The cycling was marred by one accident, in which I. Sutherland, one of the leading Canterbury riders, fell, fracturing his left collarbone. After receiving attention from members of the St. John Ambulance, he was 'admitted to the Grey River Hospital. Four teams competed ini the women’s marching contest, the music being supplied by the Greymouth Highland Pipe Band. The Blaketown team gave an outstanding performance to win the Tennent Challenge Cup, while its leader, Miss V. Henderson, was placed first in the competition for the best leader. Results were:—
