BOGOTA (Colombia), March 31 The Ban-American Conference opened at Bogota to-day with a call to the Americas to organise against Communism, although Communism and the Soviet were not mentioned by name. x Mr Joao Neves da Fontoura, the Brazilian .Foreign Minister, replying to an address of welcome by the President oi Colombia (Dr Don Mariano Ospina Perez),.said: “We see two philosophies of life confronting each other, two formidable strategic positions, one of which comes from a purely materialistic inspiration and which appears to desire to drag humanity towards a new catastrophe of unforeseeable consequences. We find ourselves even more convinced that it is urgent to organise the democratic nations 'efforts for preventive measures to preserve the values of Christian civilisation.” Dr Perez • said that the Western Hemisphere democracies were prepared to defend their common spiritual and political indepedence. The delegates, among them the United States Secretary of State (General Marshall), applauded vigorously. The conference elected the Colombian Foreign Minister (Mr Laureano Gomez) as its president.
