Auckland Unions’ Effort To Rid Trades Council Of Communists
P.A. AUCKLAND, April 1. The reason why an effort is being made to oust Communists from the Auckland Traces Council at the annual elections on April 15 is outlined to-day in an official statement on behalf of a section of trade unionists who have taken a stand against Communist infiltration. “The large majority of trade unionists are law-abiding citizens,” says the statement. “If they think the law is bad, they will take constitutional steps to alter it, not break it. “The section of the Trades Council we are opposing make no secret that their policy is that the day-to-day struggle determines tactics and any weapon is good enough to win. Vilification, distortion and personalities are their - method of debate. Controversial matters are placed last on the agenda when delegates from, long distances have had to leave. They have two pet antipathies—l, a Minister of the Crown; 2, the Labour Governmenfi
“We oppose all these methods because we believe the tactics pursued by the present executive are not in the interests of the trade union movement.”
