WATERSIDERS DISPLACE COMMUNIST LEADER AT AUCKLAND
AUCKLAND, March 31
Mr Alex Drennan, chairman of the New Zealand Communist Party, is no longer vice-president of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union. He was defeated by a narrow margin by Mr Noel Donaldson, representing the more moderate group, in last week’s poll. . , Mr H. Barnes, national president of the union, was re-elected president of the Auckland branch by a comfortable. majority over Mr J. Connor. Mr R. E. Jones retained, the secretaryship with a large majority, over a candidate sponsored by the militants, Mr D. Cameron. While the defeat of Mr Drennan and the big majority for Mr Jones are regarded in trade union circles as an indication of a definite swing from militant control, a more definite indication should become-, known on the completion of the counting of the votes for the candidates for the nine executive seats —probably at the week-end.
