Greymouth Increases In Beer And Petrol Taxation Revenue

Revenue received by the Customs Department in Greymouth for the first three months of 1948 showed an all-round increase above the amounts received in the first three months ot 1947. In view of the recent re-intro-duction of rationing, the most interesting increase is that in petrol tax, which compared with £9,897 received in the first three months of 1947 to £11,288, 1 showed an increase of £1,391. However, part of this increase may be ascribed to an increase in the price of petrol since last year. Beer duty received during the first quarter of last year was less by £3,630 than the amount received under this heading in the same period this year. The figure for the 1948 first quarter was £14,486, and for last year it was £12,856. Gold duty, too, increased, although only by £4l, from £5,646 in 1947 to £5,687 this year. Customs tax leapt from £22,333 last year, to £28,158 for the quarter just ended, an increase of

BEER DUTY FOR MARCH ALSO HIGHER. During March, 1948, £5,633 was received in beer duty, this representing an increase of £1.542 when compared with the £4,091 received last .year in the same month. The position was similar in regard to petrol tax which rose in March 1948 by £l6B from £3,652 last year to £3,710 for 1948. The largest of.,the increase for the month was that in the Sales Tax section. In March 1948 £12.667 was received in Sales Tax against the £9,398 of last year, an increase of £3,269 This is caused by the fact that February was a short month and that there were consequently two sales tax days less in March of this year. Gold duty increased from £1,643 last year to £1,844 this year, an increase of £2Ol. The figures are

£5,825. The increases are shown in the following table:— 1948 1947 £ £ Customs ' 28,158 22,333 Beer 14,485 12,856 Petrol Tax .. . 11,288 9,897 Goid Tax .. .. 5,687 5,646
