ROUND UP OF COMMUNISTS IN WEST BENGAL
CALCUTTA, March 31
The West Bengal Home Minister (Mr Kironshankar Roy) said that his Government had now undertaken an all-out round-up of Communists, who had been acquiring funds and illicit arms, and had been training the party’s volunteer “Red Guards” to use firearms.
The police have arrested more than 30 leading Communists in searches throughout Calcutta Province for members of the Communist Party and associated organisations, which ihe West Bengal Government has declared illegal. Police searched and closed a number of Communist offices. Troops fired and police charged with lathis at a crowd which had set fire to houses in Rajnutana. The authorities hav e imposed a curfew on Jaipur City. n , ~ Communist workers of the Calcutta tramways this morning urged other tramwaymen to strike. They cut the tramway depot telephones, attempted to set a tram on fire and pelted the tramcars with stones. The police arrested 12 persons.
