Ashburton’s Win At Cricket

Proving too good all round for Buller, tne visiting Ashburton team scored an outright win on Monday. f Buller balled first, and of the cus< appointing score of 58 runs, R. Day with 19 not out, and O. Smallholme 14, were the only batsmen to reach double rigures. Bowling for Ashbur ton, W. Ashworth was easily the bestalthough he only obtained one wic ket. J. Doig owed his success to the Buller batsmen taking him too cheaply and being caught in the out field. Ashburton replied with 112 runs The only batsman to score confident iy was C. Robertson, who made 53 before being dismissed. Of the Buller bowlers, W. Dillon took 3 for 3 and G. Hickford 3 for 30. R. Humph ries bowled well, but was only successful in obtaining one wicket. Buller’s second innings was more promising. R. Marshall hit freely ah round the wickets to score a grand 59 before being caught in the outfield by C. Robertson. G. Hickforcscored a smart 12, being the onij other batsman to reach double figures. However, with thet score a nine down for 100, Buller declared giving Ashburton just over half an hour to get the necessary 57 runs tor an outright win. Ashburton accepted the challenge and at the close of pia? had put on 93 runus for the loss of three wickets. Despite the poor light Robertson, M. Wall, Ashworth and L Griffiths proceeded to knock Humpnries and Stewart all over the held and provided a very bright display of batting for the close of play. Asnworth top-scored with an attractive 31 not out, and Griffiths 24, Robertson 14 and Wall 10, also rzachea double figures. The Ashburton fielding was excel lent, and the fieldsmen seldom dropped a catch. C. Robertson, wiio was outstanding, took four catches, and his fielding was an object lesson to everyone. Buller started well in tne field but gradually got worse anti in Ashburton’s second innings catches were dropped regularly.
