CANBERRA, March 30. Australia was determined to preserve her predominantly British character by insisting that the highest possible proportion of its immigrants should come from the United Kingdom, said the Minister of Immigration, Mr Calwell, in . a special broadcast to the United Kingdom to mark the sailing of the Empire Bent —the first all-migrant ship to sail from a Scottish port since the war. Mr Calwell said the number of British citizens who came to Australia in 1947 was 20. times as great as the number from America —the next highest source.
