PARTITION OF PALESTINE TO BE ATTEMPTED
U.N.O. Commission To Set up Provisional Jewish Government
(Rec. 9.30). NEW YORK, March 29. The United Nations Palestine Commission yesterday decided to proceed as rapidly as possible with a move to create a provisional Jewish Government in Palestine. In a letter to Moshe Shertok, chief of the Political Department of the Jewish Agency, the U.N.O. Commission said that it was- obliged by the U.N.O. Assembly’s resolution to take all possible steps to implement the partition of Palestine, ’ and that it intended to do so, unless it received orders to the. contrary from the U.N.O. Security Council. The Commission warned the Jews, however, that a provisional Jewish Government could exercise no authority until the British mandate ended on May 15. In the meanwhile, it is learned that the United States will introduce two resolutions to the U.N.O. Security Council to-morrow. The first is one calling on the Arabs and the’Jews to send representatives to the Security Council to arrange for a truce. The second motion is one asking the Council to call a special meeting of the U.N.O. Assembly as soon as possible to reconsider the Palestine problem. A United States spokesman said today that the American delegation had been instructed not to press for immediate action on Mr Tru nan’s immediate action on Mr Truman’s proposal for a Palestine trusteeship, but to concentrate on efforts to obtain a Jewish-Arab truce and a special session of the General Assembly.
