Chifley Says Dollar Crisis Will be Long
MELBOURNE, March 30. , “For a long time the people of this country will have to go without the things "which are imported from the dollar countries”, said the Prime Minister, Mr J. B. C'hifley, in an address to the Easter conference of the Victorian branch of the Labour Party. “It is no use thinking that m six or twelve months, or three years at the minimum, the dollar crisis will pass away. It is stark reality to-day that the United Kingdom is fighting a grim battle for its economic existence. “The Federal Government feeis that the people of this country must give to the United Kingdom every possible assistance. I cannot overemphasise the importance of increasing production now to safeguard Australia’s economy. . “There are people who think that by not doing their best, they are cheating the boss, cheating the (.government or even cheating me. The less they do the more they retard production and thereby deprive some one else of the tilings he or she needs.”
