FEARS FOR SAFETY OF ROUMANIA’S EX-KING AS PLOT IS REPORTED
WASHINGTON, March 26. The State Department announced to-day that it had received ‘•reports of rumours of a plot” against the life of ex-King Michael of Roumania.” “The department is taking measures for his safey while he is in the United States,” it added. The department’s announcement was made in answer to reports that police protection for ex-King Michael, who is visiting Washington, had been increased.
Walter Winchell, in a report from Washington, published in the New York “Daily Mirror,” states that Michael is under an extraordinary heavy guard of secret service and. Federal Bureau of Investigation officers and New York police, in his hotel suite in Washington A reinforced bodyguard is said to have “suddenly descended” on Michael, whom Winchell described as white and trembling when seen later. He stated *hat the authorities considered that information in their hands was so important that they will not allow Michael to remain at his hotel, and he will be taken into temporary seclusion at an indisclosed place, away from Washington . Michael is staying with his mother in Washington. Late r they will visit Detroit and Texas. . The Roumanian Foreign Minister (Mme Anna Pauker). addressing an election meeting at P'loseti, accused “American imperialists” of supporting ‘‘the reactionary Roumanian emigres headed by the former king, Michael.” S b added that the Americans were giving support with mon; ev that they previously “ransacked from Roumania. , .
