U.S. CONGRESS ASKED FOR “COLD WAR” RISE IN FORCES AND OUTLAY

(Rec. 9.5). WASHINGTON, March 26 The United States Defence Secretary, Mr James Forrestal, asked Congress yesterday to approve of a “Cold War” Military Budget of fourteen thousand million dollars. Mr Forrestal also asked Congress for an authorised increase of 349,500 men in the armed forces personnel. The armed forces authorised total strength is one million 732 thousand men. The Administration also asked Congress for power to draft nonveterans in the 19 years to 25 years age group. The Government asked further for universal military training as a long-range measure to be a bulwark for the nation’s defence.
