NEW HEIGHT RECORDELEVEN AND A-THIRD MILES

Set by British Aircraft (Rec. 9.55). LONDON, March 25. Group Captain John Cunningham, in a De Havilland Vampire fighter jet-propelled plane, reached a height of 59,492 feet, establishing a new international height record. The previous record was 56,017 feet, which the Italians established in the year 1938. Captain Cunningham is the De Havilland Company’s chief test pilot. He said that there were no difficulties. He said: "I just flew the plane to the highest, point that it would go. It took thirty-two' minutes to go up, and eighteen minutes to come down’’. The Minister of Supply, Rt. Hon. Mr Strauss, congratulated Captain Cunningham and the De Havilland Company on recapturing for Britain the international altitude record.
