WELLINGTON. March 25. “Experience in New Zealand has not shown that the abolition of the death penalty has been responsible for the increase in murder”, said the Minister of Justice, Mr Mason, today. He was commenting on the recommendation of the New Zealand Justices’ Association that (lie death penalty be reinstated. Mr Mason said the Dominion’s experience with abolition had not been disadvantageous, but as far as one could say there had been no change, that change had been favourable. This also applied io other countries which had introduced abolition. He could find oulv one State—in America —that had reverted to capital punishment.
