CLOTHING TRADE APRENTICESHIP SUSPENSION ENDED
P.A. WELLINGTON. March 24. The revocation of the ClothingTrade Labour Legislation Suspension Order, 1940, and the Clothing Trade Labour Legislation Suspension Order, 1940, No. 2, is announced this evening by the Minister of Labour, Hon. A. McLagan. These Orders, the Minister explained, obviated the necessity for two years' apprenticeship, and also fixed a special rate of pay for female workers who entered the clothing, the shirt (white and silk), and the dressmaking or the millinery trades for the first time after reaching the age of 21. They were introduced during the war, and were intended to facilitate the entry into the industry of women over the age of 21 at a time when there was an urgent need for increased production. The revocation order was gazetted to-day, and it is effective from the date of gazetting. Mr McLagan stated that, consequent upon the revocation, the ordinary provisions of the several awards would apply to the workers previously subject i’o suspension orders.
