WELLINGTON, Marrh 24 An increase of one penny per gallon in the wholesale and retail price of petrol is to operate as from tomorrow. A notice giving effect to this increase was published in tonight’s Gazette. Freight costs have shown an increasing tendency over recent months, and this is believed to be the reason for the increase. The new retail price petrol at the main ports will, therefore be 2s 9-d per gallon, and the new general wholesale price is 2s 6id per gallon. EXTRA PETROL FOR TAXIS WELLINGTON, March 24 The extral allowance of petrol for taxis over the Easter period, announced by the Minister ol Supply, will make' a considerable difference to the position in Wellington, where it was feared by taxi-drivers that they would be unable to maintain an adequate public service. A member oi the executive of the Wellington branch of the Taxi Proprietors’ Federation said the additional allocation would enable those taxis which had used their monthly allowance to be put on the road and all essential jobs would be met as well as Easter traffic.
