RACING NOlfs
(By “Galtee More”) OUTSIDERS PREVAIL In the years gone by there have been occasions when big dividends have been posted at Wellington meetings, more particularly when wintry conditions left the track very heavy. However, it: is seldom that favourites fail so consistently as they did at the recent meeting, but track conditions brought a complete reversal of current form. The Cup meeting of 1945 was a memorable one, for although the sun shone in all its glory it was a gloomy day for backers, not a single favourite fulfilling expectations. For the outsider in the big race to carry the day was an unkind cut, but to add to the dark and cheerless chapter (save for the fortunate few) the Telegraph Handicap, the big sprint, went to the second outsider. An investor lucky enough to have had a pound to win on each would have been richer to the tune of—well, the best part of two hundred pounds. Possibly in the near future it will be possible to state the actual amount. UNRULY The four-year-old Theio gelding Calm Sea, who has misbehaved at starting barriers on occasions lately, has been recommended for the schooling list. Calm Sea was troublesome during the New Year racing, and gave further bother at Pahiatua on Saturday. MAY COME RIGHT The Grate, a good-looking Salmagundi four-year-old marc from Trivet (the dam of Frances), is taking a long time to race up to her breeding. In each of her two races at Vincent she was struggling to get within striking distance of the leaders. She is a grand type of mare, for all that. IN FINE FETTLE Desert Giri came through her holiday racing in great style. She will probably be given a race at Gore next month, as a preliminary tj the Centennial meeting at Wingatui. Present intentions are to have her al. Riccarton at Easter, with the Greet ' Easter Handicap as her mission. CANNOT BE DISCARDED The only appearance that Frances made on the Southland holiday circuit was at Wyndham, where she raced badly and finished well back. In view of her good form at the New Zealand Cup meeting, when she won from Blue Trout and Excellency in her only start, there will be good reason to respect her claims when L next she is produced. POPULAR INNOVATION Course broadcasting systems are put to good use now for purposes other than the describing of races. They are invaluable for warning patrons not to throw away totalisator tickets because an inquiry which might affect the pay-out is about to be held. This was the case on the first day of the Manawatu meeting when the advice was transmitted to patrons before the horses had returned to the birdcage after the running of the Cup.
WELL RELATED Anytime by Airway from Jolly Time (a sister to Bruce’s dam) is a stylish galloper with a future He may not be quite up to' concertpitch vet, hut with a little more experience lie’will soon make the grade. This promising young colt is owned by the Wataroa snortsman, Mr W. R. Adamson. who it will be recalled raced Jolly Time with success several seasons backs.
PLENTY OF SIZE . Terminate, a big colt by Finis, from the Jockey Club Handicap winner,
Wild Fox, is taking time to develop. He probably will be a three-year-old before he reaches the form anticipated from one of such breeding. When furnished Terminate will be a massive horse, but there is nothing coarse about him. WELL FORWARD Invulnerable is down to make his initial appearance over country at the ,Winton meeting on Saturday. The Siegfried gelding has been a difficult horse to produce at the too of his form, but C. F. Low has him in forward order, and as he has been well schooled, he may make a forward showing. PROMISING Square Dink failed in the Douro Hack Handicap, but he ran a fine race in the Kelburn Hack Handicap on the last day. He was one of the leaders all the way and though decisively beaten by Tenor Royal he beat the rest comfortably. He looks likely to run out of hacks during the Taranaki autumn circuit. MUCH IMPROVED Silver Treasure did best of the Taranaki-trained horses on the _ second and third days of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting. He ran a great race in the Racing Club Handicap on the second day, and had he not carried the tapes in the early stages he might have beaten Desert Fox. J. G. Farrell has worked a big improvement in Silver Treasure and further- successes may come his way. PUT ASIDE Shadamai has been put aside for the remainder of the season. The Salmagundi gelding was probably the best Southland two-year-old raced during the season, and he can be expected to develop good form in another year. UNFORTUNATE MISHAP Geisha Girl has been working the reverse way round since the holiday meetings. The cause of her attemnting to run off the track in her races has been attributed to a soreness in her near shoulder. It will be a pity if it interferes with her future racing, as the Man’s Pal mare has speed much above the average and is one ilikely to succeed in open company at 1 short notice.
PLANS FOR SPARE PART Negotiations for the purchase of the Wellington Cup winner spare Part were not completed*and the horse will return to Invercargill. Probably the Dunedin Centennial Cup will be his next race, and if all goes well with him during the winter a trip to Victoria in the spring will be considered.
