SHIPPING COMPANIES CENSURED

AUCKLAND. January 29. Shipping companies laying private information and neglecting to complete the prosecutions were censured by the Magistrate, Mr J. H. Luxford to-day in dismissing a charge of absence’ without leave against Garfield Smith, second engineer in the vessel Primrose Hill. Mr Luxford said the position was most unsatisfactory. The charge was laid by the agents, who were not represented. -He added: “The- chief officer has given a lot of hearsay as evidence and the master, who is the only person who can say whether Smith had leave or not, is not present. The companies’ attitude is really contempt of court. They must enesure that the proper procedure is enforced if they whnt the law enforced.”
