POLICE DRINKING SHOULD BE SECRET
MELBOURNE, Jan 26. ' A judge has held that a ooliceman who becomes drunk ip. his own homo is culpable under police regulations if other policemen or members of the public observe his conduct. Judge Dethridge, sitting as a Court of Appeal, dismissed First Constable Gilbert Henry Toakley’s appeal against a decision of the Felice Discipline Board.
The board had reduced Toakley m rank from first constable to constable on a charge that “his conduct had been unbecoming to a member of the police force in that he drank an excessive amount of alcoholic liquor at Dandenong about July 26, 1947.” The judge held, however, that the board had been too severe in reducing Toakley’s rank. He substituted a fine- of £2O with £lO 10s costs.
