Drivers Ask £8 Wage and Week-end Overtime
WELLINGTON, Jan. 29. . The hearing was continued in theConciliation Council in Wellington, to-dav of claims for a new Dominion - passenger transport _ drivers’ award. witn improved conditions for service car drivers to bring them into line with bus drivers. The use of largervehicles in town-to-town services and the handling of larger numbers of passengers are put forward as reasons for this request. The workers’ proposal is for a five-day week for' all drivers with a seven-day spread, in place of a five-day week worked within six days. The proposal is to make Sunday part of the workingweek, with extra pay for Saturdays and Sundays. Wages increases from £7 2s 6d to £8 a week are also sought.
SHIP CARPENTERS’ pEMAND The ship work carpenters on the Wellington waterfront have presented a request to the employers for an increase in the wage rate, which is at present 3s 7d an hour. It has been claimed that outside carpenters have been brought in for work on the Rimutaka and' the Fort Nakaslev at rates varying from 4s an hour upward. Increases have accordingly been claimed for all carpenters oh ship work. Negotiations have been entered into between the employers' and the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, of which the ' ship work carpenters are a branch.
