Cape Opposition to Gold Loan to Britain

CAPETOWN, January 28.

The Nationalist Party, who are the Opposition, in the Union Parliament, has tabled a motion opposing the ratification of the £80,000,00(1 gold loan to Britain, unless South Africa imports fewer consumer goods from Britain and receives more machinery and equipment, especially tractors. Mr Jan Hofmeyer, who was Minister of Finance when the loan was agreed to in October, moving the Bill’s second reading, said it represented a South African deposit against sterling purchases for the next three years.
